I think the limited number of games is a huge part of the appeal of both college and pro football. Baseball has 160 regular season games, NBA has 86. Football demands much less of your time - only single figure home games in a year. You can watch every game and even go to all home games without it taking over your life. With less games, each one is must see TV or a must go to event. Also single game playoffs are far better than best of 7 series for getting neutrals to watch.
