REVEALED: The best 20 teams in the history of the Premier League
By Brian Sears
13 August 2010
Manchester United have been by far the most successful team in the Premier League’s 18 complete seasons to date, as can be seen today in our all-time table in the features section.
United have won 1,494 points from 696 games for an average of 2.15 points per game, a staggering achievement of consistency.
No other club comes anywhere close even to two points per game. Arsenal have 1,311 points (1.88) in second place in the all-time list and Chelsea are the only other club with more than 1.8 points per game (1.82), followed by Liverpool, who are the only other club with more than 1.5 points per game (1.76).
That’s the big four, and that’s why they’re known as the big four.
Fifth, sixth and seventh places in terms of total points are the other three ever-present teams from the period: Aston Villa, Tottenham and Everton in that order.
If the 2010-11 Premier League season consisted of the best 20 teams in points terms since the League's inception, then there would be places for the currently absent Leeds, Middlesbrough, Southampton, Coventry, Sheff Wednesday, Wimbledon (now MK Dons) and Charlton. See how the top 20 would look.
Those making way would be Sunderland, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom, Stoke, Wolves and Blackpool.
When the Lancs Oranje (that’s Blackpool) make their Premier League debut, they will be the 44th club to play in the League. Four of those 44 have won the title: United 11 times, Arsenal and Chelsea three times each, and Blackburn once.
