Premier League success is 85 per cent determined by a club's wage bill for players; in the NFL it's 14 per cent
16 August 2010
The relationship between money spent on footballers' wages and success achieved is firmly established, especially within European soccer. This is one area considered in the Review of Global Sports Salaries published by this website, but now, using the data from our salaries database, the Wall Street Journal in New York has actually put a figure on the importance of pay.
In the Premier League, it's 85 per cent, or in other words, the correlation between wages and success is 85 per cent. In short: you spend a lot, you've got a good chance of winning, and vice versa. In the NFL, the correlation is 14 per cent. Click the link above to the WSJ to see their piece in full.
