Barclays, the sponsors of the Premier League, will give a £20,000 prize to the scorer of the 20,000th Premier League goal for that player to donate to a charity of his choice, the bank will confirm on Thursday.
It is highly likely that the 20,000th Premier League goal will be scored in the next week, with Tuesday 20 December or Wednesday 21 December being the most probable dates.
Currently 19,964 Premier League goals have been scored, so there are 36 goals to go.
As Premier League matches are averaging 2.96 goals a match this season, the 20,000th is expected next week.
Last month Sportingintelligence predicted a date of Wednesday 21 December for the milestone, with linked related stories here and here.
Barclays also gave cheques to the scorers of the 15,000th (Moritz Volz, Fulham) and 10,000th (Les Ferdinand, Tottenham Hotspur) Premier League goals.
